An Introduction to
Research Training and Research Visit Opportunities
The ECHP is quite a complex dataset to analyse, even for experienced
researchers and even in the more user-friendly User Database (UDB) format.
The EPUNet Project involves organising research Research Training Sessions
aimed towards beginning and advanced ECHP users.
The Research Training Sessions are intended to serve two purposes:
- Familiarise new users with the use of the ECHP data for
longitudinal analysis
- Provide more advanced users with instruction in analytical
techniques for panel analysis
The sessions for new users are intended for researchers with some experience
in data analysis but who are new to the ECHP. Sessions for advanced users
are intended for researchers with some experience in analysing the ECHP
who would like to develop their skills in the area of advanced panel analysis.
Both types of course will emphasise issues specific to the ECHP in terms
of content, data structure etc. A limited subset of the actual ECHP UDB
dataset will be used in Research Training Sessions.
- Each session will last 5 days
- Number of participants will be limited to 10 per course.
- Some funding is available to cover travel and subsistence
of trainees.

Guidelines for Completion of Application for
EPUNet Research Training Sessions
The application should be completed in English. It can be submitted:

Who May Apply
All those conducting research in a research institution in the EU and Associated States
under the FP5 of the European Commission (the 25 EU member countries plus Bulgaria, Iceland, Israel, Liechtenstein, Norway and Romania)
are eligible to apply for a Research Initiation Sessions. Only researchers/research teams
using, or intending to use, the ECHP data for non-proprietary research (who are entitled
to publish the results of their work in the open literature) may apply.
Preparing your application
A certain number of documents will be required at the time of the application.
These include, (you can click on the links below to find out more about
what is required):
Curriculum Vitae
The Curriculum Vitae should be written in English and have a maximum length
of three pages. This document should include a summary of your education
and qualifications (with dates wherever applicable), research experience,
computing skills, and any other relevant experience.
Note that your Curriculum Vitae should be submitted as one of the following
formats: PDF (preferred), or Word document.
List of Publications
A list of your most recent publications will also be required at the time
of the application. Those with no prior publications may include a list
of working papers, conference presentations, or posters presented at conferences.
If you have none of the above, simply include an empty list of publications
with a statement such as `I have not published any results in a refereed
publication'

Current Research Plans
This document should be 500 words in length.
The proposal should follow the following structure:
- Background information:
this section will describe the current status of your research activities,
and, more generally, how your work will contribute to developments in
your research field. This section should represent no more than half
of the proposal.
- Case for attendance at Research Training Sessions
In this section, applicants must provide a justification for their participation
in the ECHP Research Initiation Sessions.
The research proposal must be submitted in
PDF or Word document format only.
Statement
of Support
A statement of support must be completed and signed by an established
researcher who has direct knowledge of the applicant (typically your research
group leader). The statement of support should not be supplied by the
prospective or previous site host or by anyone who lives or works in the
same city as the centre to which you are applying. This should be completed,
signed and sent by post to:

Authorisation Statement
This statement needs to be printed from the web,
signed by the proper authority in your department accepting responsibility
for your access to the ECHP and sent to the address above.

And also indicate what other courses might be possible for you to attend.
Places will necessarily be limited on each course.
Previous Experience with ECHP
Please give details here of any previous experience you have had
in the analysis of ECHP. Please include information on the research project
within which the analysis was carried out, the number of waves included
in the analysis and some indication of the outcome of your research, including
any published results.

Please give details here of any previous experience you have had in longitudinal
or comparative analysis. Please include information on the research project
within which the analysis was carried out, the data employed in the analysis
and some indication of the outcome of your research, including any published
results.
Statistical Software Preferred and Level
of Expertise
Please fill this in as completely as possible. The software to be used
in each Research Training Sessions will be indicated in the full course
description.
Current ECHP Licence
Please check carefully with all departments within your institution, including
the library.
